Madrid Open 2026: Coco Gauff overcomes stomach bug to reach fourth round as Jannik Sinner extends winning streak

American tennis ace Coco Gauff overcame a tough opponent and a stomach bug to advance into the round of 16 at the 2026 Madrid Open on Sunday (26 April).

Gauff battled back from a set down and recovered after being sick on court to beat Sorana Cirstea 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The two-time Grand Slam winner is the latest victim of the stomach virus that has been doing the rounds at the clay-court tournament.

The day before, former world number one Iga Świątek retired from her round of 32 match against America’s Ann Li with a final score of 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 0-3 due to the bug.

Gauff did well to battle back as she sought medical help after vomiting into a bin halfway through the second set.

The treatment did just the trick, with Gauff edging Cirstea to tie the contest before finding her groove in the third set to reach the fourth round.

In the men’s tournament, Jannik Sinner remains in the hunt for a record fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title after his 6-2, 6-3 third-round victory over Denmark’s Elmer Moller.

Sinner continues his hot streak as he claimed his 24th consecutive Masters 1000 match victory, which bodes well for his bid to complete his collection of Grand Slams at next month’s French Open.
